Abstract
This study has investigated the relationship between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety symptoms, considering the sequential mediating effect of disqualification of positive social outcome and biased activation of self-concept. 220 adults had conducted survey including Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPE), Disqualification of Positive Social Outcome Scale (DPSO), Social Interaction Self-Statement Test, Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) all in Korean version. The biased activation of self-concept was assessed as SISSTT, sum of reversed SISSTP, positive self-statement in social situation, and SISSTN, negative self-statement in social situation. The statistical analysis was performed with Jamovi version 1.2. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, FPE, DPSO, SISSTT, SIAS, SPS are all significantly correlated in positive direction with moderate size. Second, the sequential dual mediating effect of DPSO and biased activation of self-concept between FPE and social anxiety symptoms was significant. Third, single indirect effect of DPSO between FPE and social anxiety symptoms in performance situation. From these results, we can identify important variables of positivity-deficits in social anxiety and how it is related to social anxiety symptoms. We also discussed sociocultural and clinical implications. Future researches should consider more strict grouping criteria, also disorder-or-symptom-specific factors and sociocultural context of emotion regulation, which might enrich our understanding of social anxiety.
